The Proctor Library has a new YouTube channel to host video tutorials that highlight the resources and services of the Library. The channel is in its infancy at this point, but the plan is to continually add new videos to the channel. New online encyclopedias added to Credo Reference database

The Library has just added 133 new online encyclopedias to our database Credo Reference. Credo allows all 410 encyclopedias and other reference works in its collection to be searched for topics from one central interface. Credo's reference books cover a range of subjects such as Art, Business, Food & Beverage, General Reference, Geography, History, Language, Law, Literature, Medicine, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Religion, Science, Social Science, and Technology. Check out the full list of books covered in Credo and remember to ask for assistance from any of the Librarians.

Another new database added

The Library has added a new database to our online resource collection. Oxford Reference Online is comprised of 186 different electronic reference books covering a variety of subject areas. The search interface on Oxford's main page can be used to search all 186 titles at once.

Two new databases added to electronic resource collection

The Library added two new databases to our electronic resource collection, ArchiveGrid & CAMIO, both of which can be accessed from our main database page.

“ArchiveGrid offers online access to nearly a million descriptions of archival collections owned by thousands of libraries, museums, historical societies and archives worldwide. ArchiveGrid is an important destination for searching for historical documents, personal papers and family histories held in archives.”

“CAMIO is a premier resource of high-quality art images from around the world contributed and described by leading museums, all rights-cleared for educational use. Every work in CAMIO is represented by at least one high-resolution image and a description.”

New U.S. History database added

The Library has added a new history database to its electronic collection: Gale Publisher's History Resource Center: U.S. According to the publisher, "History Resource Center: U.S. provides integrated access to over 4,000 historical (primary) documents, articles from more than 30 reference titles, and over 110 full-text journal covering themes, events, individuals and periods in U.S. history from pre-Colonial times to the present. The material also includes citations from over 180 additional history journals from the Institute for Scientific Information's Arts and Humanities Citation Index, as well as the entire 'American Journey Online' series."

BRAND NEW computers now available

Thanks to hard work and exceptional planning by the Technology Services Department, over 200 public computers in the Proctor Library were just replaced with BRAND NEW computers in a little over a week's time. The new computers should be fully available for use beginning Monday, July 6.

Library closed on Friday, July 3rd

The Proctor Library will be closed on Friday, July 3rd, in honor of the Fourth of July weekend. Regular summer hours will resume on Monday, July 6th. Please see our calendar page for all operating hours during the remainder of the summer.

Limited access to public computers this week

This is the year that all the public computers will be replaced throughout the Library facility and this will be done within the next two weeks.

Following today (June 22) the only public computers that will be available will be the 9 computers on the first set of carrels outside the Internet lab.

On Thursday (June25) these last 9 will be removed and we will have no public computers available on Thursday and into Friday

If all goes well, on Friday (June 26) we may gain use of at least 9 public computers and maybe more, but there is also a chance we will be without any on Friday as well.

The following week the whole process of installing new public computers in all areas and floors of the Library will take place

During the rest of this week (June 23-25) we will see boxes and computers going in and out of this place with a particularly busy day expected for Thursday.

24 hour availability for the Library

In response to specific interest expressed by students groups, the Proctor Library has just decided to stay open during four separate 24-HOUR periods to support students during final projects and exams this semester. This will be a special trial for this semester.

The 24-HOUR days will be as follows:

Wednesday, April 15 – 7:30 a.m. through 7:30 a.m. next morning (Thursday)

Thursday, April 16 – 7:30 a.m. though 7:30 a.m. next morning (Friday)

Sunday, April 19 – 11:00 a.m. though 7:30 a.m. next morning (Monday) – NOT REALLY 24 HOURS BUT PRETTY CLOSE!

Monday, April 20 – 7:30 a.m. though 7:30 a.m. next morning (Tuesday)

The rest of the finals schedule remains the same. The full revised finals schedule for the remaining days is as follows:

What to do when you run out of prints

This is the time of year when many students run out of their print allotment. If this happens to you, visit print.flagler.edu. You no longer need to make a special trip to the Business Office. You can instead purchase prints directly through this site. Just sign on the site to get started with your Flagler username and password.

Help minimize stress!! – Message from the Director of the Library

Only four weeks until the end of the semester, and in the Library we are already seeing the stress that comes with the pressure of project deadlines and study for major tests, including final exams.

We really need your cooperation and, more important, your respect for your fellow students during these next four stress-filled weeks. Unfortunately this past week we experienced a few too many instances of disregard for fellow students, and we need to correct this situation in the coming weeks.

With so much group and collaborative study, we can not be a completely quiet place, particularly in the public spaces, but unnecessary noise certainly can be avoided in all spaces.

When in the Library, please

use what we call a “library voice” (lower than your normal voice and certainly avoid the voice you must use to be heard next to traffic on King Street)
move close to your friends so you can converse at a lower volume, rather than speaking loudly to cover a long separation
keep conversations within group study sessions at an appropriate volume, so those in your group can hear you but others throughout the Library can not
avoid unnecessary noise or social conversations that may distract others who are studying
silence your cell phone and conduct any cell phone conversations well away from those studying
use headphones if you need to listen to audio on your computer, and keep volume low
remember particularly as you enter and exit the Library that others are studying, so please keep noise down (the marble floor unfortunately amplifies sound)
as you exit the elevator, remember to keep noise down because it opens into an area where others are studying (again the marble floor amplifies sound)
maintain complete quiet in our designated “quiet" Reference Room (Room L-133), and the two designated "quiet" study carrel spaces on the north side of the 2nd floor, as well the individual study carrels on the 1st and 2nd floors

Interlibrary Loan notice

ILL is a service that allows you to order books and articles (for free) from other libraries if the Proctor Library can not provide you access. Please see our Interlibrary Loan page for details concerning the use of this service.

The final deadline for submitting Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests for this semester is Monday, March 30, 2009. Please note this date and submit your requests accordingly.

All ILL books are due back to Proctor Library on or before Friday, April 10, 2009.

Spring Break hours for the Proctor Library

Spring Break is happening this week on Thursday and Friday (March 19th & 20th). The Proctor Library will still remain open throughout the week, but on a reduced schedule. Typically the Library resembles a ghost down during Spring Break, so this is the perfect opportunity to come in and have the place almost to yourself. Here are the Library hours for the week:

Monday & Tuesday: normal hours
Wednesday thru Friday: 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Saturday: normal hours resume

New database trial: House of Commons Parliamentary Papers

The Library has secured access to a trial for the Proquest database House of Commons Parliamentary Papers (HCPP). According to Proquest and available at the HCPP site or our own trial database page, the "HCPP are the most detailed primary source for the past two centuries, for Britain, its colonies and the wider world. They are a major part of the historical record. The Parliamentary papers influenced public opinion and social and political philosophy, and provided a forum for ideas for hundreds of thinkers, among them Marconi, Keynes, and Beveridge." The trial password is hcpp2009 and is active through 03/24/2009.

How to Search Every Database at Once

The Library subscribes to a research tool called 360 Search that enables you to search virtually every major Library database at the same time and do so from one central interface. Moreover, from the 360 Search opening page you may specify specific subject areas or specific databases to be searched. Ebrary problems and troubleshooting

Ebrary, one of the Library's two electronic book collections, recently changed its user interface. With this change has come a display problem which the Ebrary team is still working to correct. In the image below, note the red circle on the left hand side. This is an example of the display problem that some users are encountering while trying to read pages of ebrary books. As a quick fix, press on the blue button as seen in the right hand red circle. That button for the "ebrary reader" should allow you to view their books without any problems.

Access Historical Documents Through the Issues & Controversies Database

Many students use our database Issues & Controversies to research controversial topics, but did you know you can also access historical documents through this resource? Coverage begins in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence and continues through the current day with FBI recorded conversations of former Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich. Avoiding Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the witting or unwitting use of someone else's words or ideas without acknowledging it by means of notation and/or reference and is a serious problem among college students today - and even here at Flagler College. One thing that makes plagiarism difficult to deal with is that many students are honestly not even aware of what constitutes plagiarism and what does not.

In order to help students figure out what plagiarism is, and what it is not, a link "Avoiding Plagiarism" has been placed on the Proctor Library home page, near the bottom under "Find Information."

Of course, you can always ask a librarian for help if you're wondering whether you have accidently plagiarized something in your work.

Citing your sources

Now that the Spring semester is in its third week, many of you are now or will soon be in the process of writing a research paper, and your professor will almost certainly require that you cite your sources using the APA, Chicago, or MLA citation style. For those of you unsure where to turn for help in generating citations, the Library has a web page dedicated to citing your sources. On our homepage, look under the first column (Find Information) and select the link for How to Cite Sources. On this page you will find information regarding all of the different style guides that the Library has, along with their call number locations, as well as a set of links to other websites with numerous examples on citing sources (under Online Citation Guides).

Lastly, don't hesitate to ask a librarian for assistance if you run into any trouble.

Library closed on MLK Day

The Proctor Library will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 19. Regular hours will be maintained through the weekend and will resume on Tuesday, January 20. The operating hours throughout the entire Spring 2009 semester can always be found on our calendar page.

Ancient coin exhibit in the Library

The Library is pleased to be currently hosting an exhibit dedicated to ancient coins and other artifacts. The exhibit has been put together by the Coin and Currency Club of Flagler College and displays coins from the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine empires. In addition, other artifacts such as pottery, arrowheads, and bead money are on display. These coins and artifacts range from 400 B.C. to 1803 A.D. To view this exhibit, enter through the gates on the first floor of the Library and head toward the 3 display cases past the elevator doors. The ancient coin exhibit can be found in the back right case.

The Library will be returning to regular semester operating hours beginning on the first day of classes, Wednesday, January 14th. The hours for the entire Spring 2009 semester can always be found on our calendar page.

Unless otherwise specified, regular hours are the following:

Mon.-Thu.: 7:30 a.m.-midnight
Fri.: 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Sat.: 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Sun.: 11:00 a.m.-midnight
